High Schools around the state meet for 7-on-7 state tournament

This weekend, high school football squads from around the state are sending their best 7-on-7 teams to battle in the state tournament in College Station.

Some of the best high school football programs in the state will be highlighted this weekend as Katy, Desoto, Manvel, and defending 6A Division 2 state champion Cedar Hill will be sending teams to Aggieland.

The tournament will return to Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station for the second year. The tournament won’t be held on the Texas A&M campus, where it was played until 2013 when the Aggies made the move to the SEC.

The tournament consists of two 64-team brackets with 16 four-team pools in each division. Each team will play all of the teams in their aligned pool during pool play. The top two in each pool will advance to play in the single-elimination championship bracket, while the bottom two will advance to a single-elimination consolation bracket.

The two defending state champions, Seven Lakes (Division 1) and Graham (Division 2), failed to make the state tournament this year.

Division 1

This bracket is compiled of teams in 5A and 6A throughout the state.

The Houston and Dallas areas both will be represented with 18 teams in this bracket.

While predicting champions is about as impossible as getting a perfect March Madness bracket, many experts have claimed Manvel to be the favorite to take the Division 1 crown.

Pool play will be played Friday while the championship and consolation brackets will take place on Saturday.

Notable pool play matchups:

Desoto-Cinco Ranch (Katy)
Stratford (Houston)-Coppell
Mesquite Horn-Manvel
Colleyville-The Woodlands

Predicted Champion: Manvel

Division 2

This bracket consists of all qualifying schools that fall on or below the 4A classification.

Pool play will be held Thursday while the championship and consolation brackets will be held Friday.

Defending 4A Division 1 state champion Navasota will be represented in Pool A along with fellow powerhouse Stephenville.

Celina returns with sights of its 5th 7on7 title. The Bobcats won titles in 2000, 2007, 2009, and 2012. They will appear in Pool P along with Abilene Wylie, East Bernard, and Wimberley.

Bay City, Needville, and Lutheran South will be making their first appearances in the state tournament.

Notable pool play matchups:

Canton-La Marque
Celina-Abilene Wylie

Predicted champion: Navasota

  1. You have got to love football in TEXAS!!!!!!! Great article and explanation about the 7 on 7 tourney as I knew it existed, but wasn’t away of the details of the tournament and divisions. Nick Harris did a great job, and definitely has a future in sports writing.
