San Marcos High School safety Prudy Calderon received an invitation earlier this week to participate in the national combine at the US Army All-American Bowl next month.

The combine gives the junior athlete an opportunity to compete against some of the nation’s top underclassmen and compete in front of high school and college football scouting organizations and analysts.

combine_tempThe National Combine focuses on measuring speed, strength, quickness, and football skill, while also providing educational seminars touching on the recruiting process, speed and strength improvement, and leadership.

Calderon had an impressive junior campaign with the Rattlers, earning two all-district nods for defense and special teams. A varsity member since his sophomore season, Calderon has been utilized all over the field, and that could certainly continue into his senior campaign.

While competing in a new district and in class 6A was a challenge in itself, Calderon said he looks forward to seeing how he measures up against his peers on the national level.

“I was real excited because I’ve known about the event for a while now and to be able to be apart of it is that much better,” Calderon said. “I always look forward to see the competition and gauge where I believe I’m at skill wise. I’m gonna go and compete regardless though.”

That will to compete has landed Calderon on several scouting reports of district coaches this year, but his participation in the combine could also land him more college attention.

The combine will be held from January 5, 2017 to January 7, 2017 in San Antonio.
