It was little more than a week ago that the Texas Longhorns extended a scholarship offer to quarterback Sam Ehlinger. At the time, Ehlinger, a 2017 standout out of Austin Westlake, said he wasn’t sure if he’d quickly work through the recruiting process or take his time and slowly work through the 18 months before signing his letter of intent. It would be a gut feel, Ehlinger said, and he’d only know how he would react when the moment hit him.
That moment came about on Tuesday evening, with Ehlinger announcing that he had officially committed to the University of Texas.

A 6-1, 207-pound prospect, Ehlinger has seen his stock shoot through the roof this summer after numerous impressive performances.
Ehlinger has developed a strong bond with UT coaches, including quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson, and he’s said there are a number of factors he likes about the Longhorn program and the University of Texas in general. He grew up a fan of the program and would attend games as a child. Both of his parents went to Texas. Add it all up and Ehlinger was ready to make an early decision.
Last year, as a junior, Ehlinger earned District 14-6A Newcomer of the Year honors after throwing for 2,325 yards and 25 TDs against just 6 interceptions. He completed nearly 64 percent of his passes and added 714 yards on the ground and 9 rushing touchdowns.
