I recently caught up with former San Marcos Rattlers DE/LB Colby Vidrine to talk about his transition from high school to college. Colby signed with Midwestern State University on National Signing Day and has been with the Mustangs all season.
He was a two-year starter for the Rattlers and earned All-District first team honors in 2015 and 2016, and is currently a business marketing major at MSU.
1. What has the transition been like for you from moving from home and getting settled in at Wichita Falls?
It was a pretty quick transition, especially since I came up early in the summer. The city is real homey, kind of like San Marcos.
2. How is everything going with the football team? You’re playing at a position with plenty of upperclassmen. What has it been like being able to watch and learn from some of the other players?
The football team is great, we got our own little swag we carry about ourselves, and I feel like I fit in perfectly here. I’ve been sitting back and soaking up as much as I can from the old heads, and I watch them very closely during practice.
3. What’s been the biggest difference between high school and playing at the HS level and college so far?
Definitely the speed, physicality is a big part of it too, but the speed and football IQ at this level is much higher, so everything just happens so fast on the field.

4. What do you miss most about San Marcos aside from family and friends?
Definitely Garcia’s.
5. What has it been like watching from afar and seeing your former teammates and the success they’ve been having for the Rattlers this year?
It’s crazy really, I feel like Coach Soto & the staff have done a good job of shifting the whole winning culture down in San Marcos. Especially with my little brother (Sophomore wide receiver Cameron Vidrine) on the team this year I have been keeping up, I’m proud of every single one of those boys.
Midwestern State is currently 7-0 on the season and has two remaining games before the NCAA Division II playoffs begin. Feel free to leave a note for Vidrine in the comments below and we’ll be sure to pass them on.
We are so proud of you Colby! Keep working hard!
