San Antonio Area Sub-5A Bi-District Playoff Pairings

Austin High (7-3) vs. Boerne Champion (5-5), Unicorn Stadium (New Braunfels)
A difficult District 26-5A slate and a tough non-district schedule has contributed to a 5-5 record for Boerne Champion head into its playoff tilt with Austin High. Quarterback Davis Brin, a Tulsa verbal, leads the offense for the Chargers. Brin has thrown for 2,106 yards and 22 TDs. Konner Beavers leads with receiving corps with 56 catches for 779 yards and 8 TDs, while Chase Locke has covered 548 yards this season with 6 TD receptions.

Highlands will host Texas 5A AP No. 5 Angleton at Alamo Stadium on Friday, which on paper is a daunting task. Angleton averages 51.2 points per game while allowing just 3.5. Backfield workhorse Rene Palomino has over 1,600 rushing yards this season along with 20 TDs. Joseph Palafos has thrown for 1,917 yards and 22 TDs this season, while main target Dre’Chan Moody has 729 receiving yards and nine scores to pace the Owls to a 7-3 regular season record.

CC Flour Bluff (8-1) at Southside (8-2), Southside ISD Stadium
Flour Bluff comes into its road encounter with Southside with an 8-1 record and its only loss coming to CC Veterans Memorial. Flour Bluff is led by Devin Burlingameand Simeon Wells out of the backfield. The two have combined for 17 rushing TDs this season. Braden Sherron is the quarterback, totaling 15 passing TDs on the season compared to just three INTs. As Eddie Perez goes, so does Southside. Perez is second in Region IV with 2,425 yards and 29 TDs this season, owning three games over 300 yards. Michael Hernandez has over 500 receiving yards and 6 TDs on the campaign.

Mission Memorial (9-1) vs. Brownsville Lopez (8-2), Tom Landry Stadium (Mission)

Dripping Springs (10-0) vs. Austin LBJ (7-3), Reeves Complex (Austin)

Richmond Foster (6-3) at Burbank (5-5), Alamo Stadium (Saturday at 1:30 p.m.)
Burbank was the final qualifier out of District 28-5A, finishing the season with a 5-3 record in district play. Julian Basaldua has accounted for over 1,900 yards and 28 TDs on the season, while Marcus Bolden leads the team in receiving. Be careful putting it in the air against the Burbank defensive backfield. The Bulldogs are led by Dylan Gusme with five INTs, while Carlos Covarrubias has picked off four passes.

CC Veterans Memorial (9-1) vs. Eagle Pass Winn (3-7), Lehnhoff Stadium (Schertz)

Brownsville Memorial vs. Laredo Nixon (7-2), 6 p.m. Saturday, Alice Memorial Stadium

Austin McCallum (10-0) at Medina Valley (6-4) – Panther Stadium (Castroville)
Medina Valley got a tough draw at home for the bi-district round, hosting unbeaten Austin McCallumDevin Johnson and Caytan Chang are the leading rushers for the Panthers, combining for 1,248 rushing yards and 12 TDs. Chang leads the Panthers in receiving with 575 yards heading into the postseason.

After a bye week to fix some issues, the Hurricanes will face a Rosenberg Terry that received a lot of love in the preseason from Region IV coaches having been ranked highly in the preseason. Austin Ashworth has totaled 18 TDs this season at quarterback, while Brandon Adams has chipped in with nine scores on the ground. Colangelo Scott averages 20 yards per catch and has over 650 yards on the campaign.

Floresville (6-4) at Alice (7-3) – Alice Memorial Stadium (Friday, 8:00 p.m.)
Floresville heads to Alice after giving Southside all it wanted to cap-off the regular season. Sophomore quarterback Darian Mayberry leads the young Tigers on offense with 21 TDs accounted for. Saith Williams and Kane Numera share time out of the backfield for Floresville, combining for 1,447 rushing yards and 16 TDs.

Brownsville Pace (5-5) at Mission Sharyland (8-2) – Sharyland Pioneer Stadium (Mission)

Austin Crockett (3-7) at Kerrville Tivy (8-2) – Antler Stadium (Kerrville)
Kerrville Tivy’s two losses have come to teams with a combined record of 20-0 as the Antlers finished the runner-up in District 26-5A behind unbeaten Dripping Springs, ranked No. 9 in the Texas 5A AP Poll. On a senior dominated roster, Hunter Saunders leads the team in rushing with 811 yards on the season. David Denais leads the team with 139 tackles and five sacks.

Memorial (7-3) at Victoria West (4-5) – Victoria Memorial Stadium
Memorial has picked up casual fans all over San Antonio and in the Lone Star State. After finishing 0-10 in nine out of the last 12 seasons, the 28-5A district title holders will attempt to continue its storybook campaign. One of the main reasons why Memorial is flying high has been the play of quarterback Anthony Esparza. The signal caller has 2,261 passing yards and 30 TDs this season, with Matthew Padilla andCarlos Urdiales leading the team in receiving while combined for half of Esparza’s TD production through the air.

CC Calallen (10-0) vs. Uvalde (6-4), Eschenburg Field (Floresville)
Michael Mata leads Region IV in passing for Uvalde, throwing for 3,150 yards and 29 TDs on the season for the Coyotes. D’Andre Carroll has been a huge factor offensively for Uvalde, averaging over 35 yards per catch with 11 total TDs on the season. Josh Sandoval led the team with 61 catches. Calallen is worthy of its No.4 state ranking according to the AP. Expect to see the run a lot with Calallen. In a Week 2 victory over 26-6A district champion SA Johnson, the Wildcats rushed for 450 yards on 68 carries and did not attempt one pass in a 53-35 victory.

4A-Division I

Waco La Vega (10-0) vs. Fredericksburg (6-4), Pflugerville

— La Vernia is a dangerous opponent for Kingsville after facing a tough non-district schedule which included a victory over Southside. Junior quarterback Clayton Chadwick leads the team in rushing on a young roster.

Canyon Lake (8-2) vs. Gatesville (7-3), Gupton Stadium (Leander)

Pleasanton (9-1) vs. Rio Grande City Grulla (5-5), Hornet Stadium (Corpus Christi)
— Johnny Zamora has thrown for 2,180 yards and 26 TDs this season compared to just two INTs. Sophomore Dalton Hobbs averages 26 yards per catch and has 12 TDs on 26 catches, while Isaac Mendiola has 665 receiving yards and 6 TDs.

Somerset (8-2) vs. Zapata (5-4), Shirley Field (Laredo)
— Zadock Dinklemann has been a steady hand for the Bulldogs this season. The BYUverbal has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards and 19 TDs on the campaign. Isaiah Riveraleads Somerset in receiving with 10 TDs on the season, while Taylor Bryce is expected to wreak havoc on the defensive side of the football.

Taylor (6-4) vs. China Spring (7-3), Buckley Stadium (Killeen)

La Feria (6-3) vs. Rockport-Fulton (4-5), La Feria

Liberty Hill (7-2) vs. Boerne (8-2), Dripping Springs
— Brooks Klutts remains high on the charts of Region IV’s leading passers, having thrown for 2,255 yards and 27 TDs. Douglas Hodo III leads the Greyhounds in receiving with 40 grabs for 793 yards and 14 TDs, averaging nearly 20 yards per catch.  Connor Fisher paces the Boerne offense with 641 yards and seven TDs.

4A-Division II

Wimberley (9-1) vs. Carrizo Springs (3-7),  Harlandale Memorial (San Antonio)

Raymondville (9-1) vs. Sinton (7-2), 7 p.m. Thursday, Cabaniss Stadium (Corpus Christi)

Pearsall (10-0) vs. Hondo (2-8), Mack Laxson Stadium (Pearsall)
– Pearsall ran the table to finish 10-0 on the campaign, but has a dangerous opponent awaiting in a 2-8 Hondo team that pulled a huge upset last season over Devine facing a similar situation. Pearsall allows just 9.8 points per game defensively. On offense, Oscar Cubriel has rushed for 1,037 yards and 14 TDs at 9.3 yards per clip. For Hondo, senior running back Jordan Gomez leads the team with 843 yards and 11 TDs.

Sweeny (6-3) vs. Orange Grove (6-4), Port Lavaca

Cuero (9-0) vs. CC West Oso (5-5), 7:30 p.m. Friday, Gobbler Stadium (Cuero)

Crystal City (8-2) vs. Llano (5-5), Bob Benson ’66 Stadium (Central Catholic)

Rio Hondo (8-1) vs. Aransas Pass (4-5), Wildcat Stadium (Corpus Christi)

Geronimo Navarro (9-1) vs. Devine (3-7), 7 p.m. Thursday, Harlandale Memorial (San Antonio)
— Will Eveld leads the Panthers into the playoffs to face a tricky test in Devine.Eveld leads the team with 10 TDs on the ground. Five different Panthers have rushed for five touchdowns are more through 10 games, with Chris Gomez chipping in with nine rushing scores. Evald leads the team with four INTs on defense. Connor Smith, a 6’6 senior, leads the Warhorses into the playoffs after facing a tough schedule all season long. Grant Collins leads Devine in rushing.
