One-On-One with Westfield’s Matt Meekins

Matt Meekins - Head Football Coach - Spring Westfield

Tony goes one-on-one with the Westfield Mustangs’ Head Football Coach Matt Meekins.

Tony: Wrapping up your scrimmage, how has the team looked so far?
Matt Meekins: I’ve been pleased with the work we’ve had. We kind of fought through some of the lightning and some of the heat. We’ve actually practiced twice during athletic period just to so we could make sure we could practice the full amount of time. The kids are working hard. We’ve had a great summer with our strength and conditioning program, our seven-on-seven has carried over. That was nice test for us to get ready for the schedule that we chose.

Tony: What’s your outlook for the 2018 season?
Matt Meekins: Be ready for the next play with energy and purpose. Don’t focus on the last play. It’s always about the next play, and so on, and so on, and so on and at the end of the day have one more point than the other team.

Tony: Tell me about a few of the leaders on your team.
Matt Meekins: During the offseason, we had a lot of guys come out here, like our skill guys. We expect them to run track. Our quarterback, Terrance Gipson, our receiver, Ra’quon Washington, another receiver, Ashton Calloway, those guys did a really great job… and more guys. Came out here and competed at the track. Had a great offseason. O-linemen Jawaun Singletary, and Cedric Claiborne, 3-year starter linebacker Franklin Montgomery, our safety, Ian Massey, he’ll be number 5 next week. Jabrell Warren. All those guys really did a good job in the offseason, coming out here when it’s hot, getting on this track. It’s fun if you think it’s fun. They get a great job.

Tony: Tell me about a few players that I don’t know right now, that I’ll know by the end of the year.
Matt Meekins: I don’t know who you know (laughs). Jabrell Warren was a junior on JV last year. We brought him up for the playoffs. He’s had a real good offseason, a good summer, and a good camp. We are expecting him to make some plays. He’s a guy that can play outside linebacker or safety. He’ll be involved in a lot of special teams. Nakeo Thomas we are expecting big things from. We are expecting big things from everybody, but those are some guys you may not have heard of.

Simply put I am a fan of Texas high school football. I attend as many high school football games as I can - 82 games in 2017, 86 games in 2018, 76 games in 2019. I also have some limited computer skills and I use those to provide information to the #txhsfb community. I am always looking for new ways to provide information to the #txhsfb community.
