Tony’s Week 2 Preview: Montgomery and the Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase

After seeing the smallest of the small play at 450-seat Baker Field in Bryan in Week 1, I’ll be watching 5A and 6A schools play in Week 2 including four games in the 92,000-seat Cotton Bowl.

All rankings are THSCA regional rankings.

Willis (0-1) vs. Montgomery Lake Creek (0-1)
Thursday, 9/6, 7:00pm, Montgomery ISD Stadium, Montgomery

This will be Lake Creek’s second ever varsity football, so it’s obviously the first meeting between the two schools.
Willis went 2-7 in 2017. Michael Wall (former Lake Travis Offensive Coordinator), takes over the program for 2018. Willis hasn’t won a playoff game since 2010.
Pat Kennedy (former The Woodlands Defensive Coordinator), is launching the program at Lake Creek.
Willis lost to Huntsville 24-34 in Week 1.
Lake Creek lost to Caney Creek 13-39 in Week 1.

Lake Creek key players: Chase Niesner and Ethan Harper

Waco Midway (0-1) 6A Reg 2 #11 vs. Mansfield Lake Ridge (0-1) 6A Reg 1 #15
Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase, Friday, 9/7, 5:00pm, Cotton Bowl, Dallas

This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
In 2017, Waco Midway was 15-1 with the only loss being to Cy Fair in the 6AD2 2017 State Championship game.
In 2017, Lake Ridge was 12-2. They lost in Week 1 to Denton Guyer and in the 5AD1 Regional Final to eventual state champion, Highland Park.
Midway lost to Trinity 7-37 in Week 1.
Lake Ridge lost to Tulsa Union 30-36 in Week 1.

Lake Ridge key players: Chandler Rogers and Dewone Jackson


Denton Guyer (0-1) 6A Region 1 #15 vs. Cedar Hill (1-0) 6A Region 1 #6
Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase, Friday, 9/7, 8:30pm, Cotton Bowl, Dallas

This will be the 7th meeting between the schools. Cedar Hill leads the series 5-1 and has won the last four games in the series.
In 2017, Guyer was 7-4 losing in the first round of the playoffs to Byron Nelson.
In 2017, Cedar Hill was 4-6 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Guyer los to Aledo 0-40 in Week 1.
Cedar Hill beat Tyler 57 -7 in Week 1.

Cedar Hill key players: Shayne Lawrence and Quin Bright

Lake Highlands (1-0) 6A Region 1 #16 vs. Plano East (1-0) 6A Region 2 #17

This will be the 5th meeting between the schools. Plano East leads the series 3-1. Plano East won the last meeting between the schools (2015).
In 2017, Lake Highlands was 6-5 losing in the first round of the playoffs to Sachse.
In 2017, Plano East was 3-7.
Lake Highlands beat Mesquite 45-35 in Week 1.
Plano East beat LD Bell 42-14 in Week 1.
Lake Highlands key players: Jackson Thomson and Jono Barrows
Plano East key players: Jaelen Anderson and Braylon Mallory

Sachse (0-1) 6A Region 2 #14 vs. Trinity (1-0) 6A Region 1 #2

This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
In 2017, Sachse was 12-1 losing in the third round of the playoffs to Pflugerville Hendrickson.
In 2017, Trinity was 11-3. Their losses where Week 1 to Tulsa Union, Week 3 to Colleyville Heritage, and in the 6AD1 Regional Final to eventual state champion, Allen.
Sachse lost to Coppell 28-30 in Week 1.
Trinity beat Midway 37-7 in Week 1.
Sachse key players: Myles Nash and Derrick Rose
Trinity key players: Laki Ellis and Keanu Hill
