On paper, the Manvel Mavericks looked like the favorites entering Friday’s game against Crosby. Manvel was ranked as the number one 5A team in the area, but rankings and matchups on paper don’t always play out the way you expect them to.

Crosby coach Jeff Riordan and his Cougars never seemed to pay much attention to any of that, and although Manvel got out to an early 21-0 lead, the Cougars fought back and quarterback Jaiden Howard caught a pass from backup Kobe Coker as time expired and the Cougars completed the 49-47 upset.

Manvel’s rushing attack was dominant all game, but several key turnovers leading to Crosby scores fueled the comeback.

Manvel will look to bounce back against Sharpstown on Friday night. Crosby has a bye next week, but they’ll put their 2-0 record on the line on September 21 against West Orange-Stark.
