SAN ANTONIO – The East Central Hornets bounced back from their week three loss to Alamo Heights to begin district play with 31-21 win over San Marcos on Friday night.
The Rattlers, who were coming off a come-from-behind road win over Laredo United, struggled to defend East Central’s rushing attack all night.
While both teams went scoreless through the first quarter, East Central piled on the points in the second. First via a pass from Austin Trainer to Adrian Zapata, followed up by a series with Michael Stephens finding success rushing around the ends. The drive was finished by a Deangelo Rosemond seven-yard touchdown run.
The Rattlers answered back with senior running back Jamon Johnson, who was heavily featured in the running and passing game for the Rattlers. He finished a San Marcos drive with a five-yard touchdown run to narrow the margin.
East Central had another drive into the red zone to end the first half, but a San Marcos stop forced them to settle for a field goal.
After a lightning delay, Stephens reeled off a 59-yard run for paydirt. Johnson would score again on another rushing touchdown, but as they did all night, East Central answered back.
One last-ditch attempt at a comeback would come too late for San Marcos, with Alex Garcia finding Takai Madgett in the end zone, but only 25 seconds were left on the clock with a ten-point deficit.
Stephens led the Hornets with 109 of their 259 rushing yards.
For San Marcos, Johnson piled up 98 rushing yards and 65 receiving for two touchdowns. Receiver Mhyson Williams caught six passed for 102 yards.
San Marcos will look for their first district win against likely their stiffest district test at home next week against Converse Judson, who is 3-0 and averaging 46 points per game.
East Central will be on the road against New Braunfels.
