Whitney tops McGregor in 9-3AD1 Opener

The game looked promising early for the McGregor Bulldogs when Campbell McCauley intercepted a Devin Wilson pass at the Whitney 36-yard line only a minute and half into the game.

But the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs after four plays and only gaining 2 yards.

After the two teams exchanged punts, the Whitney Wildcats started the next drive at their own 22 yard-line. Devin Wilson hit Kolby Tanner on a screen pass. Tanner ducked outside and raced down the left sideline for a 78-yard score to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

After a quick three and out from the Bulldogs, Whitney started from their own 13 yard-line with 49 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter. The ensuing drive spanned into the 2nd quarter, took 9 plays, covered 87 yards and was capped by a 4-yard run from Dez Garner to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.

After an interception on the next McGregor drive, Whitney turned the ball over on downs at the McGregor 30.

McGregor was forced into a three and out. The punt snap sailed past the punter. The punter scrambled for the ball and was able to get off a punt that was blocked and recovered by Blake Helms in the end zone. The PAT was no good and Whitney lead 20-0. That would remain the score into halftime.

Whitney was able to control the clock in the 2nd half. With drives lasting 4:48 (resulting in a fumble), 3:31 (resulting in Whitney’s final TD of the night), 6:17 (resulting in a turnover on downs), and 3:33 (resulting in a missed field goal).

McGregor was able to get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with Johbe Smith caught a VeAndre McDaniel pass over the middle and streaked into the end zone for 78-yard TD completion to account for the final score – Whitney 27, McGregor 7

Whitney moves to 3-2 on the year (1-0 in 3AD1 District 9).  Whitney is off next week.

Both teams next opponent is Maypearl (04,0-1). Maypearl lost Groesbeck 14-60 Friday night. McGregor plays Maypearl next week. Whitney is off next week before facing Maypearl in Week 7.
