15-5A-II: Very sorry, Somerset; Southside survives, Calhoun whips Floresville

Somerset 10, Alice 0

In the VYPE Hill Country Preview in August, the San Antonio writer picked Somerset dead last in District 15-5A-II because Somerset lost a lot of college talent from its 2017 roster. Time to eat some crow.

Somerset continued its quest towards a district championship with a 10-0 victory over Alice on Friday night. Hunter Hernandez grinded his way to 198 rushing yards as the Bulldogs moved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in District 15-5A-II.

Hernandez’s 3-yard touchdown run with 4:54 remaining in the game was more than enough as Somerset’s defense continues to be old reliable. In its last three district wins, the Bulldogs have allowed just 23 total points including a 17-16 win over Southside (5-2, 3-1).

In all of the years of legendary coach Sonny Detmer, the 2018 Bulldogs might be one of his best coaching jobs ever.

Somerset held the normally high-flying Coyotes to 174 total yards in the victory. Week by week, the absolute miss-fire and disrespect shown to the Bulldogs eats at him.

Port Lavaca Calhoun 77, Floresville 29

Floresville was overcome by one of the hardest offenses to defend in football if it gets rolling. Port Lavaca Calhoun steamrolled to a 77-29 victory in a game which saw the Sancrabs reach 77 points in three quarters.

Super sophomore Steven Johnson eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, rushing for 263 yards and two touchdowns in a game covered by the Victoria Advocate.
