The Moebes Era for Lockhart Lions begins with 42-0 win over Austin Travis

For six years the Lockhart Lions ran the Slot-T Offense under Coach Brian Herman. In May of 2019 Coach Todd Moebes was selected to become the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for the Lockhart Lions. Coach Moebes would scrap the Slot-T Offense and bring in a new offense with the Run-Pass Option Spread Offense. An offense that would bring delight to many Lockhart Lion Fans who have been wanting to see a new offense.

On Friday night at House Park in Austin, Lockhart Fans would get their chance as the Lions would face-off against the Austin Travis Rebels in the Season Opener for the 2019 Season.

Lion Fans wouldn’t have to wait long as the Lockhart Lions would receive the opening Kickoff and start their first possession at their own 29 yard line. On the Lions first play Junior QB Stoney McGuire would Complete his first passing attempt to Jayden Garza for a 9 yard pass. In a drive that would see the Lions run 11 plays from scrimmage. QB Stoney McGuire would go 2-5 for 9 yards. While the rushing attack for the Lions took over with 44 yards on 5 carries and the Lions first drive would be capped off by a 28 yard TD by SR Daetron Ellison. The extra point attempt by Eduardo Ponce would be good and with 8:56 in the 1st Lockhart would take the lead 7-0 and never look back.

Austin Travis Rebels would go 3 and out in their first possession of the game and would punt the ball away as Obed Noyola would get off a 40 yard punt that would go out of bounds at the Lockhart Lion 27 Yard Line. The Lions first possession went for 62 yards on 11 plays. The Lions second possession of the game would go for 73 yards on 13 plays, 3 passes and 10 running, and would end with a 3 yard touchdown run by Jordan Garcia. After Alfredo Jaimes-Jaimes nailed the extra point Lockhart would go up 14-0 with 3:06 remaining in the 1st quarter.

The second drive for the Rebels would only last 4 plays before SR. QB Steven Lopez would attempt his second pass of the game only to have Sr DB  Devon Dillard-Williams make a great break and intercept the pass and the Lions would once again take over at their own 33 after an Unsportsmanlike penalty was marked off against the Lions. On the first play QB Stoney McGuire would throw his first interception as Darian McFerrin would return the interception into Lion territory and would be tackled at the 47.

After another 3 and out for the Rebel offense the Lions would regain possession on their own 21 yard line where the Rebel defense would finally make their first defensive stand of the night only to get nullified when on 4th and 20 the special teams for the Rebels would be called for roughing the punter and the Lockhart Lions would retain possession of the football. The Lions would take advantage of the penalty by the Rebels special teams and march down the field with a 50-50 mixture of pass and run. The Lions QB Stoney McGuire would get his first passing Touchdown of the season when he connects on a 25 yard TD pass to Robert Branch. Eduardo Ponce would kick the extra point and with 7:25 left in the first half the Lions would take a 21-0 lead.

The story of the night began all about the new Spread offense for the Lockhart Lions. As the game went on the new story would be the dominance of the Lockhart Lion Defense. On the Rebels 2nd play of their possession Jasael Batres would pick off Steven Lopez at the Lions 35 and run it back to the Lions 44 yard line. This time the Lions were unable to capitalize on their second turnover of the night as the Rebel Defense would tighten up and force Lockhart to punt the ball. Alfredo Jaime-Jaimes would get a 29 yard punt as the ball would be down in Rebel territory at their own 47 yard line.

The Lockhart Lion Defense would continue their dominance as the Rebels would turn the ball over on downs at the Lions 35 yard line. Due to a dead ball penalty against the Lions they would have to start their drive from their own 19 yard line. The Lions offense would take 12 plays to march 81 yards down the field to get into the end zone on an 8 yard TD run by Jordan Garcia and his second TD of the night. The Rebels would get nowhere on their next drive and the scoreboard would hit triple zeros to end the first half and head into the Locker Room trailing the Lockhart Lions 28-0.

The Rebels would receive the kickoff to start the 2nd Half only to find themselves going 3 and out two possessions in a row while the Lockhart Lions would score on their next 2 possession on a 3rd Touchdown run for Jordan Garcia from 6 yards out. Jaime-Jaimes would make the extra point and the Lions lead would extend 35-0 over the Rebels. After the Rebels 2nd straight 3 and out. The Lockhart Lions would score their last points of the night as Stoney McGuire would connect with Jackie Edwards Jr. for an 11 yard TD pass followed by a successful extra point try by Eduardo Ponce as the Lockhart Lions would force the running clock and Eventually close out the game defeating the Austin Travis Rebels by a score of 42-0.

Lockhart Lions would rush the ball 43 times for 267 yards and 4 Touchdowns while Stoney McGuire would go 14-31 for 146 yards 2 Touchdowns and 1 interception. Leading Rusher for the Lockhart Lions would be Jordan Garcia who would have 13 carries for 79 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Leading receiver for the Lockhart Lions would be Robert Branch as he would have 3 receptions for 54 yards and 1 Touchdown. The Travis Rebels struggled all night against a stingy Lockhart Lion defense and were only able to manage 44 yards on 19 carries and QB Steven Lopez would go 5-14 with 2 interceptions. Leading rusher for the Rebels was Darian McFerrin who had 6 carries for 37 yards and the leading receiver was Jaylen Crayton who hauled in 2 catches for 10 yards. The Lockhart Lions would out gain the Travis Rebels 413 total yards to the Rebels 58 yards. The Lions would rack up 267 on the ground while the Rebels only manage to gain 44 yards. The Lions QB Stoney McGuire would throw for 146 yards while Rebel QB Steven Lopez would throw for only 14 yards.

With the first win in the Coach Moebes era in the books. The Lockhart Lions are 1-0 as they will be playing their Home Opener next week on September 6th at Lions Stadium as the 0-1 Ducks of Taylor fly into Lion Country.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm, while the 0-1 Travis Rebels look to rebound against the 1-0 University Trojans, coming off a 36-35 win against the Waco Lions. The game will be played at Burger Center on September 6 at 7:30 pm
