Calvert's Danielshijohn Hurst (#6) takes a pitch from Kevin Wooten (#10) on Saturday against St. Joseph Catholic

The St. Joseph Catholic Eagles scored with 1:10 remaining in the game to tie the game at 33-33. I muttered to myself “too much” time left. And indeed, it was.

The Calvert Trojans went 49 yards in 3 plays covering 41 seconds to score on a 26-yard run by Daneilshijon Hurst to grab the lead at 40-33 with 29 seconds remaining in the game.

The Eagles ended the game at the Calvert 20-yard line with two attempts to score and possibly tie or take the lead, but it was to be as both Trace Brightwell passes fell incomplete.

In an atypical six-man game, the first score of the game came with 42 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Hurst completed a 42-yard pass to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead.

Hurst added a 15-yard touchdown to push the lead to 14-0 with 6:27 remaining in the half.

St. Joseph Catholic closed the gap to 14-13 before half time on 6-ayrd and 24-yard touchdown runs from Twister Barrington.

The Eagles took the lead mid-way through the 3rd quarter on 12-yard touchdown pass from Trace Brightwell to Matthew Nelson moving ahead 21-14 with 5:55 remaining in the 3rd.

Hurst struck again for the Trojans on the final play of the 3rd quarter connecting with Billy Thompson on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Calvert within 1 at 20-21.

Calvert took the lead at 27-21 on a 49-yard run from Hurst with 7:03 left in the game.

St. Joseph tied the game at 27 with 4:08 left in the game.

Hurst would give the Trojans the lead 33-37 on a 68-yard run with 1:47 left in the game.

Calvert moves to 1-0 on the season. The Trojans play the Tribe Warriors in two weeks. The Warriors opened the season with a loss to Rankin.

St. Joseph is now 0-1 on the season. The Eagles play Temple Holy Trinity Catholic next Friday. The game will be Holy Trinity’s season opener.

Simply put I am a fan of Texas high school football. I attend as many high school football games as I can - 82 games in 2017, 86 games in 2018, 76 games in 2019. I also have some limited computer skills and I use those to provide information to the #txhsfb community. I am always looking for new ways to provide information to the #txhsfb community.
