A man who claimed that the Monsanto herbicide Roundup was the cause of his cancer received a $332 million jury verdict in California.

A Rare Kind Of Lymphoma

Mike Dennis, 57, of Carlsbad, California, said in a lawsuit that he developed a rare kind of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2020 as a result of using the Bayer-owned company Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller for decades. Dennis said glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup, was the cause of his cancer.

“The active ingredient in roundup, glyphosate, is genotoxic,” Adam Peavy, Dennis’s lawyer, stated to NBC 7. “It causes DNA damage once it’s absorbed through the skin, and that’s what ultimately causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”

Peavy added that Dennis has been in remission for almost three years, but the illness still has no known cure. “His doctors have told him it’s going to come back and we’re just waiting to see if that happens,” Peavy stated.

A jury in San Diego Superior Court found that Monsanto was negligent in informing customers about the dangers of Roundup. Dennis received $325 million in punitive penalties in addition to $7 million in compensatory damages. The jury decided that Bayer was not at fault and that the Roundup product design was not careless.

It is anticipated that Germany-based Bayer would file an appeal of the decision. Claiming that the company tainted the city’s water supply, Chicago sues Monsanto.

With the $63 billion acquisition of Monsanto in 2018, Bayer became the largest seed and chemicals firm globally. Despite moving swiftly to discontinue the Monsanto brand, Bayer was still faced with thousands of Roundup-related cases. Bayer declared in 2020 that it will resolve around 125,000 claims, both filed and unfiled, for up to $10.9 billion.

A bid by Bayer to dismiss thousands of lawsuits alleging the weedkiller caused cancer was denied by the Supreme Court last year.

A 2022 government investigation discovered glyphosate in over 80% of urine samples from children and adults in the United States. Glyphosate was detected in 1,885 out of 2,310 urine samples that were representative of the general public, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
