Klein Collins uses Strong Defense, Ground Game to Down Clear Springs 17-7

Klein Collins held Clear Springs to 129 yards of total offense, 40 in the second half, while rushing for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns to top the Chargers 17-7 Saturday night at Klein Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers were led in the ground game by Braelon Bridges (24 carries, 127 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Johnathan Lewis (15 carries, 105 yards).

The game opened with a 42-yard kick off return by Klein Collins’ Frank Hickerson to give the Tigers the ball at the Clear Springs 48 to start the game. Bridges carried the ball five times on the opening drive for 47 yards before fumbling at the 1-yard line. Clear Springs’ Jacob Muellner recovered the fumble and advanced it out to their own 21-yard line.


The Chargers were forced to punt after 5 plays. The Tigers started the next drive at their own 20-yard line. On the fifth play of the drive the Chargers’ Errionn Brow intercepted a Colby Powers pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to give the Chargers the lead 7-0 with 5:11 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Klein Collins went 75 yards in 5 plays on the ensuing drive capped by a Bridges 9-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 with 3:42 left in the 1st quarter.

After the Chargers went backwards five yards on their possession, the Tigers returned the punt to the Chargers’ 38-yard line. Three plays into the drive, Malcolm Davis intercepted a Powers pass to end the Tiger threat.

Following an exchange of punts, the Chargers drove 67 yards in 10 plays before attempting a 34-yard field goal that clanked off the right upright with 0:04 remaining the half. The Tigers kneeled the ball to end the first half.

The Chargers opened the second half with a 6-play 32-yard drive that ended with a 53-yard punt that was downed in the end zone.

Klein Collins then drove 60 yards in 13 plays. The drive was capped by a 36-yard field goal from Tanner Ward that gave the Tigers the lead 10-7 with 2:50 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The drive consumed 5:00 of the clock.

Clear Springs was forced to punt on the next drive and Klein Collins took over at their own 25-yard line.

The ensuing Tiger drive covered 75 yards in 14 plays eating 5:55 off the clock and was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Bridges that gave the Tigers the lead 17-7 with 6:29 left in the game.

The Chargers final drive of the night ended after a bad snap after they were pinned back to their own 1-yard line following a bad snap.

The Tigers took over at their own 43-yard line. After recording one first down, they were able to kneel out the clock to seal the 17-7 victory.

Klein Collins moves to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers open district play against Klein Forest next Thursday night. Klein Forest is 0-2 after losses to Aldine MacArthur and Cypress Lakes to open the season.

Clear Springs falls to 0-2 on the season. The Chargers host George Ranch next Friday night. George Ranch is -02 after losses to Dickinson and Clear Lake to open the season.
