El Paso Eastwood has found their new head football coach, and it’ll be a familiar face on the sidelines for the Troopers at the start of the 2015 season.
Julio Lopez, who previously worked at Eastwood in 2012 as a history teacher and assistant coach, was hired to replace the departing Phil Barrios, who stepped down late last month.
Lopez will have big shoes to fill as Barrios turned around the football program at Eastwood in his four years as head coach, but hiring his former assistant seems to be a step in the right direction.
Lopez, a University of Texas at El Paso graduate and former wide receiver for the Miners, comes to Eastwood after most recently serving as the offensive coordinator at Socorro. He also previously worked as an assistant at UTEP.
According to KTSM, the 25-year-old Lopez will be welcomed back to Eastwood in a reception to be held May 5, the day before Lopez assumes his new position.
