Midland High wins crosstown showdown to make 6A playoffs

Entering the final week of the regular season Midland High had one main goal, beat crosstown rival Lee by more than 9 to qualify for the playoffs. As it turned out with Abilene High’s win over Odessa High a win with no point differential would be all they’d need in 3-6A action.

Jackson Anuszkiewicz threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns, rallying the Bulldogs (4-6, 2-3) from an early 3-0 deficit on a 22-0 run, and the Bulldogs walked away with a trip to Arlington to visit Arlington Martin.

Midland High seemed to have everything going against them. Their leading player was out, they had lost by a larger margin to common opponents, and some people were calling for Craig Yenzer’s job. What did the Bulldogs do? Put together their best game of the season.

After passing for more than 40 yards on the first series, Sema’J Davis found the Rebels (4-6, 2-3) in a rut and unable to move down the field. For the remainder of the game he found himself only able to equal the first series total. Making things worse was Lee’s focus on running the ball. The running ticked the clock away faster than Lee would have liked, and before the Rebels realized it they they were losing the time of possession battle by a decent margin.

Midland High won’t have much time to celebrate the win. With Arlington Martin (8-2, 7-0) looming, Midland High knows they’ll need to find a way to boost their run protection or they’ll find themselves in the same straits Lee found themselves in this week.
