Smith and Smith Lead Yoemen Past McGregor

Cameron Yoe’s Smith duo did a number on McGregor.  Wide receiver Sicory Smith and running back Traion Smith provided over 90 percent of the offense and led the Yeomen to a 35-7 win over McGregor in Class 3A Division I bi-district action at Waco ISD Stadium.

Sicory Smith caught five passes for 104 yards including touchdown receptions of 30, 38, and 31 yards.  The junior wideout also rushed twice for 77 yards and scored on a 19-yard reverse.  Traion Smith carried 17 times for 170 yards and added a 76-yard touchdown run.

“Sicory has always been a playmaker, and he certainly made them tonight,” Cameron head coach Rick Rhoades said.  “He separated us from McGregor, and he’s a good compliment to Traion.”

The Bulldogs (5-6) held Traion Smith in check during the first half, limiting the senior running back to 37 yards on nine carries.  But late in the third quarter, Smith turned the corner and raced untouched 76 yards to the end zone, icing the game for the Yoemen (10-1) with a 28-0 lead.

“McGregor came out in a 5-1 defense that was designed to stop Traion,” Rhoades said.  “For him to gain 170 yards is unbelievable.”

Cameron scored on three of its four first-half possessions.  On their first series, the Yoemen marched 68 yards in nine plays with Sicory Smith taking it to the house from 18 yards out on a reverse.  Logan Boyett kicked the extra point, and Cameron took a 7-0 lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

The Yoeman needed only six plays on their next drive to double their margin.  After holding McGregor on downs at the Yoemen 10, Cameron faced third-and-11 and called on their speedy wide receiver.

Sicory Smith reversed the field again and shot down the right sideline for a 58-yard gain.  Three plays later, Jacob Smitherman connected with Smith for an 18-yard scoring pass, putting Cameron in front 14-0.  Smitherman finished the night with eight completions in 15 attempts for 143 yards.

On McGregor’s ensuing possession, a fierce pass rush sacked CJ McLeain at midfield, and the Bulldog quarterback coughed up the ball.  Defensive lineman Noah Kostroun recovered the fumble and rambled to the Bulldog 25.

On fourth-and-13, Smitherman found Sicory Smith open on the post route and nailed him with a 28-yard touchdown pass.  The PAT gave Cameron a 21-0 lead with just under four minutes left before the halftime.

“We did a good job defensively most of the night,” McGregor head coach Tim Seward said.  “But Sicory just killed us.”

McGregor moved into Cameron territory on all four first-half possessions with two reaching the red zone.  But the Bulldogs failed to score, getting a 36-yard field goal attempt blocked and throwing incomplete in fourth down at the Yoemen 10.

The Bulldogs almost scored on the second quarter’s final play when Smitherman underthrew a pass, and Jonathan Phenix intercepted at the McGregor 40.  But Cameron forced Phenix out-of-bounds at the Yoemen 7 as time expired.

“We moved the ball real well from the 20 to 20,” Seward said.  “But we could never cash it in.”

McGregor finally cracked the scoreboard late in the game on Josh Kelley’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Taylor.  Taylor wound up with 11 catches for 155 yards.

Cameron Yoe next faces the winner of the Buna-Malakoff contest in the area round.
