Martin strikes early and often to end Midland High season

It took 7:03 before Myles Kelley found Jimmy Nelson III for Arlington Martin’s first score. From there on the bloodbath was on as Arlington Martin crushed Midland High in 6A Division I Bidistrict action.

Seven different players scored touchdowns for Arlington Martin, and Arlington Martin never trailed. Martin moved themselves to 10-1 this season while Midland High dropped to 4-7 to end the season. The scoring summary below illustrates just how one-sided it was.

Martin led in EVERY statistical category they needed to- touchdowns, receiving yards, rushing yards, punts average, forced turnovers, and player totals. Perhaps the one area Martin needs to address was the unnecessary penalties.

It’s possible Midland High was distracted by last weeks petition. Last week more than 500 fans signed a petition calling for the immediate removal of Craig Yenzer as head coach at Midland High. The Bulldogs went out and responded by beating crosstown rival Lee to make the playoffs, only to get crushed by Arlington Martin for the second consecutive year.

While the score may indicate otherwise, Midland High holds high hopes for the future. Nearly 75% of Midland High;s starters are underclassmen, including all three quarterbacks. For the fifth consecutive game someone different led the Bulldogs in the receiving category, and Brooks Betcher did so in yardage and by scoring a touchdown. The only question remaining is will Yenzer be back to coach the Bulldogs next season, or will he join the likes of Odessa High’s Ron King, who resigned earlier this week? Only time will tell.
