No. 4 ranked Cameron Yoe faces a stern test for achieving its fourth consecutive state title when it encounters Malakoff in Class 3A Division I area action. Last week, the Yoemen advanced with a 35-7 win over McGregor, while the Tigers trounced Buna 41-14.

“It’s a great challenge,” Malakoff head coach Jamie Driskell said. “As long as we don’t get intimidated, we should be OK. Our job is make sure our kids are successful on every play.”

With running back Traion Smith held in check the first half, Cameron turned to wide receiver Sicory Smith. Smith caught five passes for 105 yards with four reaching the end zone and rushed twice for 77 yards. For the season, the junior has 50 catches for 972 yard and 12 touchdowns.

Traion Smith, who gained only 37 yards on nine carries in the first half, broke loose in the second half and totaled 170 yards on 17 carries including a 76-yard touchdown. The senior running back has rushed for 2,199 yards on 202 carries and scored 37 touchdowns in 2015.

Quarterback Jacob Smitherman finished with eight completions in 15 attempts for 143 yards and four touchdowns. During the 2015 campaign, the junior has thrown for 1,894 yards with 120 completions in 186 attempt and 19 touchdowns.

With the win over the Bulldogs, Cameron head coach Rick Rhoades surpassed Toby York with the most wins in school history. York totaled 77 victories during his tenure and led the Yoemen to a state title in 1981.

Upset by Buna 34-24 in the first round last season, Malakoff jumped on the Cougars quickly last week. Sophomore quarterback Judd Miller threw three first-half touchdown passes, two to QT Baker covering 41 and 29 yards and another 18-yarder to Tyler Russell.

Sandwiched between Miller’s second and third touchdown passes, Dylan Grim scored from 11 yards out, and AJ Cook scampered for 24-yard touchdown, giving the Tigers a 35-0 halftime lead.

For the year, Miller has completed 129-of-193 passes for 2,129 yard and 34 touchdowns. The Tiger quarterback spreads his throws around between Baker, Russell, and Cook. This season, Baker leads Malakoff with 38 catches for 775 yards and 17 scores. Russell (37 receptions, 654 yards, 12 touchdowns) and Cook (38 catches, 518 yards, 5 touchdowns) follow closely behind. Grimm heads the Malakoff ground attack with 892 yards on 101 carries and 10 touchdowns.
