The Austin Regents Knights used a late 4th quarter scoring explosion to seal their victory over the Houston Second Baptist Eagles and advance to next Saturday’s TAPPS Division II title game.
Austin Regents led 17-0 late in the third quarter behind a 21-yard field goal by Will Stone, a 41-yard touchdown pass from Drew Dickey to Josh Franklin, and a 40-yard run by Dickey and looked to be cruising to victory.
But Second Baptist’s Everett Skillern scored on an 8-yard run late in the 3rd to cut the lead to 17-7.
The early portion of the 4th quarter passed with no scoring before Second Baptist cut the Knights’ lead to 17-14 on a 15-yard completion from Finn Nicholson to Michael DiCecco with 5:30 remaining in the game.
The Eagles attempted an onside kick but it was recovered by the Knights’ at the Eagle 47.
And then the Knights’ kicked into high gear. On the first play from scrimmage Drew Dickey broke free and scored to push the Regents’ lead to 24-14 with 5:17 remaining.
Second Baptist fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and the Knights’ recovered at the Eagle 17. Dickey scored from 2 yards out with 2:59 remaining in the game to push the Regents’ lead to 31-14.
On the second play of the ensuing drive, Regents intercepted a Nicholson pass and returned it to the Eagle 10 yard line. Trevor Tezak scored from 3 yards out and the Knights walked away with a 38-14 win.
Austin Regents will square off against the Dallas Christian Chargers Saturday for the TAPPS Division II tittle.
