Twenty seconds remaining in the state championship game. Your team has just scored to pull within 1 point of the three-time defending state champion. You opponent calls a time out to ice your kicker. Your kicker misses wide left but your opponent is called offsides. You decide to go for two and get it to complete a come-from-behind win and upset your heavily favored opponent.

Sound like a Hollywood script? Well, it might be, but it is also exactly what happened at AT&T Stadium Wednesday night in the 2AD2 Championship game.

With 4:11 remaining in the game, the Windhorst Trojans forced a turnover on downs from the Mart Panthers and took over at there own 25-yard line. Windthorst converted on 4th and 6 and 4th and 12 on the drive. Cy Belcher leaped into the end zone from 1-yard out to pull the Trojans with 1 at 20-21 with 26 seconds remaining in the game. And then the scenario above unfolded with Ethan Belcher strolling around the right side for the 2-point conversion and the win.

Windthorst wide receiver Kyle Wolf made several incredible catches on the night and a couple of critical catches on the final drive and was named the games Offensive MVP with 5 receptions for 80- yards and 1 TD. Wolf also had 53 return yards.

Windthorst defensive lineman Tryston Harding was named the games Defensive MVP with 4.5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 2 fumble recoveries.

The first score of the night came on a 1-yard run  by Windthorst’s Cy Belcher to spot the Trojans to a 7-0 lead with 2:08 left in the first quarter.

Mart answered quickly as Roddrell Freeman his first of three touchdowns on the night on a 26-yard run to know the score at 7-7 with 0:47 left in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Cy Belcher connected with Kyle Wolf for a 12-yard TD pass to put the Trojans back in front 14-7 with 5:34 left in the first half.

And Mart answered again a 65-yard run by Freeman with 0:59 left in the half to tie the game again at 14-14.

Freeman would give the Panthers their first lead of the night at 21-14 with 6:41 left in the 3rd quarter to set up the dramatic finish covered above.

Mart HFC Kevin Hoffman on Kevin Wolf – “We knew they were going to throw the ball to him. We tried to double him some. We tried to put a man in his face and play zone over the top. We tried several things, played out normal stuff a little bit there at the end and he made a couple of great catches and the quarterback made some phenomenal throws.”

Windthorst HFC Chris Tackett on the game/ season – “It was a joy the whole year working up to the state game. We knew we were up against a great competitor in Mart and Coach Hoffman. We just fought hard and executed the game plan.”

Windthorst HFC Chris Tackett on the two-point conversion play to win the game – “When we got the penalty, we knew we had a good play there that we could go to. That’s what we called and the guys executed it. Ethan took over on that and saw some green grass and ran to it.”

While field level access was limited, Antony Blalock did manage to capture these pictures from the stands.

Simply put I am a fan of Texas high school football. I attend as many high school football games as I can - 82 games in 2017, 86 games in 2018, 76 games in 2019. I also have some limited computer skills and I use those to provide information to the #txhsfb community. I am always looking for new ways to provide information to the #txhsfb community.
