Canadian Wins Wild Fourth Quarter Shootout Over Franklin for 3AD2 Title


The Canadian Wildcats and the Franklin Lions combined for 35 points in the first three quarters of the 3AD2 Championship Thursday afternoon at AT&T Stadium. They then combined for 34 points in the fourth quarter.

Canadian lead 21-14 late in the third quarter and was threatening to increase their lead when they turned the ball over on downs at the Franklin 2-yard line.

The Lions then went on a 13-play 98-yard drive that spanned into the 4th quarter. Seth Spiller scored on a 3-yard run to tie the game at 21 with 8:10 left in the game.

The Wildcats answered quickly on a 6-play 82-yard drive that lasted only 1 minute 43 seconds capped by a 47-yard run by Hayze Hufstedler and Canadian lead 28-21 with 6:22 left in the game.

Franklin tied the game at 28-28 on a Seth Spiller 1-yard run with 3:42 remaining in the game.

The Lions quickly forced a Wildcat punt and took over at their own 47 with 2:14 remaining in the game.

On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, Seth Spiller lofted a 37-yard pass to Braden Smith and the Lions had their first lead of the game at 34-28 after the PAT was missed with 1:02 left in the game.

Canadian struck on the second play of the next possession Josh Culwell hit Reagan Cochran for a 52-yard touchdown with 0:28 left in the game. Edgar Salazar banged home the PAT and the Wildcats lead 35-34.

Franklin managed to get to the Canadian 40-yard line with 1 second remaining in the game, but the Wildcats managed a sack to end the game.

After early exchanges of punts Canadian got on the board first on a 65-yard pass from Josh Culwell to Gary Anderson to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 4:12 remaining in the 1st quarter.

After a Franklin punt, Canadian stretched their lead to 14-0 when Culwell connected with Anderson again, this time for a 4-yard touchdown on the final play of the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Franklin got on the board on a 59-yard pass from Marcus Wade to Malcom Murphy to cut the Canadian lead to 14-7 with 11:43 remaining in the first half.

That would be the final scoring play of the first half, and the teams went to the locker rooms with Canadian leading 14-7.

Canadian pushed their lead to 21-7 with 8:18 remaining in the 3rd quarter on a 34-yard pass from Josh Culwell to Twister Kelton.

Franklin cut into the Canadian lead on 53-yard run from Seth Spiller with 6:56 left in the third quarter.

Josh Culwell (196 passing yards, 4 TDS, 113 rushing yards) was named the offensive MVP.

Ethan Jackson (9 tackles) was named the defensive MVP.

While field level access was limited, Antony Blalock did manage to capture these pictures from the stands.
