Football is a game of inches.

The Crosby Cougars came into this game as the clear underdogs against the No. 3 Fort Bend Marshall Buffalos. All eyes were on the Cougars and Buffalos as they were one of few games being played on New Year’s Day.

The Cougars came in to this game after defeating the then undefeated Huntsville Hornets 32 to 29 in Overtime. The Buffs easily handled the Nederland Bulldogs, 49 to 0.

The game got started with Crosby winning the coin toss and electing to receive. Both defenses kept each other from finding the end zone. Fort Bend Marshall QB #1 Roland Harvey completed a long pass to WR #15 Chris Marshall to the Crosby 7 yard line. The Cougars defense held the Buffs from scoring and forced the turnover on downs. You could hear the frustration from both teams as the next drive begun.

The Cougars capitalized on this as QB Reggie Branch took off for 29 yards and the score. The Cougars PAT failed and the score was now 6-0 in favor of Crosby.

The Buffs were then given a chance on another drive, but it failed. Forcing the punt team to come out. The Cougars started off the drive at the Buffs 33 yard line. Thinking ahead, the Cougars attempted to pass on the Buffs defense. This was not a good idea as Buffs #12 Adari Haulcy intercepted a Crosby pass.

This sparked the Buffs offense as they took over at the 45 yard line. Time continued to tick away. Just before half, Buffs QB #1 Roland Harvey had a 26 yard pass completed to WR #15 Chris Marshall for a TD. The PAT was successful and the Buffs took the 7-6 lead into the half.

As the third quarter begun, the Buffs received the kickoff. The Buffs waisted little time as QB #1 Roland Harvey had a 12 yard pass completed to WR #15 Chris Marshall for a TD.

As the third quarter came to a close, the Buffs led 14 to 9. Crosby Kicker #47 Trevor Helburg booted a 38 yard field goal before the Buffs TD drive.

Little did we all know what the fourth quarter was going to bring us. As the fourth quarter begun, Buffs RB #3 Javion Matthews found the end zone with a 6 yard scamper. The score was now 21 to 9 in favor of the Buffs. The Crosby crowd grew silent as the Buffs crowd erupted. The Cougars though did not give up.

As the Buffs defense crumbled, QB #1 Reggie Branch commanded the Cougars offense. Branch yet again found the end zone on a 21 yard run. The PAT was successful by Helburg and the score was now 21 to 16 in favor of the Buffs.

The Crosby crowd with their cowbells became very rowdy as they saw their team go from trailing to leading. Crosby #2 Deniquez Dunn danced around the Buffs defense and found the end zone on a 28 yard rush. Only being up by one, the Cougars went for two. Dunn completed his own drive by successfully gaining the two points from the attempt. The score was now 24 to 21 in favor of Crosby.

Nervous Buffs fans began to pace. As always the Buffs had a response. Buffs QB #1 Roland Harvey completed a 29 yard pass to #3 Javion Matthews for a TD.

The wild and wacky finish was only getting started. The score was now 28 to 24 in favor of the Buffs. Somehow and some way, the Cougars responded. Crosby #2 Deniquez Dunn completed a 62 yard pass to QB/WR #1 Reggie Branch for a TD. The Cougars fans erupted as they took the lead late in the game. The score was now 31 to 28.

The Buffs had their chance to respond but failed to do so on fourth down. The Cougars defense swarmed the Buffs offense.

This allowed the Cougars to close out the game, or they thought. The Cougars found the end zone yet again, sealing their victory late. Reggie Branch followed his blockers all the way to the end zone.

The Buffs had a chance to attempt to score, but a sack by the Cougars ended the Buffs playoffs run. With the 37 to 28 victory, the Cougars improved to 11-3, while the Buffs fell to 12-1.

The Cougars magnificent playoff run continues as they’ve defeated previously undefeated teams in Texas (11-1), Huntsville (11-1), and Fort Bend Marshall (12-1). The Cougars advanced to the 5th round for first time since 2014 and 3rd time in program history (2020, 2014, 1960). Crosby will will face off against the winner of Pioneer/Liberty Hill next weekend.
