ORE CITY- Sophomore running back Jaxon Minter rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns as Redwater cruised to a 43-0 win over Ore City at Rebel Stadium.
Redwater (1-0) started the 2021 high school football season with a bang on the very first play from scrimmage when Minter exploded through a hole at the line, and out-raced everyone for a 64-yard touchdown to give the Dragons an early, 7-0 lead.
Ore City appeared to have something going on their initial drive of the game, but the Redwater defense stuffed a 4th-and-2 to give the ball back to the Dragons at the 43 yard-line. Both teams traded possessions then once again Ore City moved the ball into Redwater territory but the Dragon defense came up with a huge turnover when David McKeever stepped in front of a receiver for an interception. He returned it to the house for a 59-yard, Pick-6 to give the Dragons a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Ore City (0-1) was its own worst enemy in the first half as they committed six turnovers. The Rebels botched a snap that gave Redwater the ball at the Rebel 45 yard-line. Two plays later, Redwater cashed it in for a score when Minter broke free for a 34-yard touchdown to give the Dragons a 21-0 lead.
Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Ore City, they did. Another muffed punt resulted in Redwater recovering the loose ball at the Rebels 11 yard-line. The Dragons capitalized on the miscue on the very next play when Korben Hoffmeister tossed an 11-yard scoring strike to Malcolm Brown on a fade route to the corner of the endzone, which allowed Redwater to take a 28-0 lead into the break.
Redwater’s defense forced six turnovers in the first half, including two interceptions by Carson Bowman and the Pick-6 by McKeever.
The Dragons picked up where they left off in the first half as Minter found paydirt for the third time in the game on a 9-yard rushing touchdown to give Redwater a 34-0 lead. Ore City continued to struggle offensively mainly in part to a relentless Redwater defense that never allowed the Rebels passing attack to get untracked.
Redwater added another touchdown late in the third quarter when Hoffmeister delivered a short pass to Brown, who got around a couple of defenders then outran everyone down the left side for a 59-yard touchdown. It was the second time the duo hooked up for a score in the game as the Dragons padded their lead to 40-0.
Redwater added a field goal to cap off the scoring as the Dragons opened the season with a convincing, 43-0 blowout win on the road.
With the win, Redwater has already equaled its win total from 2020 and will look to double that next week when they host New Diana. Meanwhile, Ore City will look to rebound from their opening-season loss as they head to White Oak to take on the Roughnecks in week two.
