It was a tight game early in the 3rd quarter on Friday night when the Gonzales Apaches hosted the Fredricksburg Billies. Then the Billies scored 21 points in a six-minute span to take a 17-point lead and put the game away.
Fredericksburg got on the board on the opening drive of the game on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Cole Immel to Jesse Leija. The Billies extended their lead to 14-0 on their next possession on a 15-yard pass from Immel to Mason Reeh.
The Apaches narrowed the lead to 14-8 on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jarren Johnson to Derrick Garza with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter.
The score remained 14-8 until 0:13 left in the half when Johnathan Tejada kicked a 23-yard field goal to pull the Apaches to within 14-11.
On the first play from scrimmage, the Apaches took the lead on a 70-yard run by Garza. Gonzales led 18-14.
And then the scoring burst by Fredericksburg.
The Billies took the lead 21-18 with 9:34 left in the 3rd quarter, extended the lead to 28-18 with 6:41 left in the 3rd and further extended the lead to 35-18 with 3:36 left in the 3rd. Credit Jesse Leija with the TDS.
Stephen Wade added the final TD of the night and Fredricksburg walked away with a 42-18 win.
Fredericksburg is now 3-0 on the season. The Billies host the Wimberley Texans (2-1) Friday, 9/17 at 7:30pm.
Gonzales is now 1-2 on the season. The Apaches travel to Ingleside to face the Mustangs (2-0) Friday 9/17 at 7:00pm.
