The game started with Lake Creek winning the opening coin toss and electing to defer their option to the second half. When the Lions kicked off, they attempted a popup onside kick which they field in the air appearing to be successful. But Lions were flagged for fair catch interference and were accessed a 15-yard penalty and had to kick again. This time the kickoff went out of bounds and the Lions were accessed another penalty (this time 5-yards) and Morton Ranch started their opening drive at the Lake Creek 45-yard line.

The Mavericks Santana Scott capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run (his first of 5 TDs on the night) to spot Morton Ranch to an early 7-0 lead.

The action settled down with exchanges of punts until early in the second quarter.

Morton Ranch faced a 4th and 2 from the Lake Creek 37-yard line. The ball once again went to Scott and we sprinted to the end zone. The PAST was blocked and Morton Ranch led 13-0.

Lake Creek cracked the scoreboard on the ensuing drive on a 15-yard touchdown run by QB Cade Tessier to pull within 13-7.

After and exchange of punts, Morton Ranch once again dialed long distance. This time it was QB Josh Johnson connecting with Marcus Jackson for a 52-yard TD and pushing the Maverick lead to 20-7.

The score remained 20-7 until halftime.

And then things got crazy!

Lake Creek opened the second half with an 80-yard drive capped by 13-yard run by Tessier to cut the Maverick’s lead to 20-14.

On the next play from scrimmage, Scott dashed down the left sideline for a 75-yard Morton Ranch TD to make the score 27-14.

On the next drive, Lake Creek faced a 4th and 15 from the Morton Ranch 39 and Tessier completed a pass to Dakota Kenneth for a TD to make the score Morton Ranch 27, Lake Creek 21.

On the next drive, Morton Ranch was forced to punt and the snap went over the punter’s head and was recovered by Lake Creek at the Morton Ranch 12-yard line.

Three plays later, Tessier rushed in from 9 yards out to give the Lions their first lead of the game at 28-27 with 3:03 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Morton Rach missed a 41-yard field goal attempt on their next drive and third quarter ended with the score Lake Creek 28, Morton Ranch 27.

On the drive that spanned from the 3rd to the 4th quarter, Lake Creek scored on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line on a run by Justin Freeny to extended their lead to 35-27.

After and exchange of punts, Morton Ranch took over at their own 44 and Scott exploded for a 56-yard TD run. The Mavericks went for a two-point conversion to tie the game but failed. The Lions lead 35-33 with 5:46 left in the game.

The Mavericks then attempted and recovered an onside kick at the 50-yard line.

On the third play from scrimmage, Josh Johnson was hit hard as he threw the ball but managed to get it to Scott who raced 47-yards for his 5th TD of the night and put the Mavericks in the lead 40-35.

After Lake Creek turned the ball over on downs at the Morton Ranch 43 with 1:58 remaining in the game, the game appeared over.

But three plays later, Morton Ranch fumbled and Lake Creek recovered at the Morton Ranch 40 with 1:08 left in the game.

Sawyer Matchett (replacing an injured Tessier) rushed 15 yards down to the Morton Ranch 25. After a short gain and a holding penalty the lions were at the Morton Ranch 29. Matchett connected with Debraun Hampton in the back corner of the end zone to retake the lead for the Lions. The two-point attempt failed and the Lions led 41-40 with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

Morton Ranch drove out to their own 42 with 2 seconds remaining in the game. Instead of going for a Hail Mary the Mavericks elected to get the ball in the hands of Scott with an underneath pass. Scott shook and avoided tacklers before finally being tackled at the Lake Creek 20-yard line to end the game.

Both teams open district play next week.

The 4-0 Lions host the 2-1 Fulshear Chargers next Friday night.

The 2-2 Mavericks host 1-2 Katy Taylor next Friday night.
