Charlie Strong’s strategy seems to pay off as Texas dominates National Signing Day

The University of Texas has taken the nation by storm on this 2016 edition of National Signing Day. After already having rolled off recruits such as QB Shane Buechele during the 2015 season, many more high-profile recruits are starting to don the burnt orange down the stretch.

Recruits started coming in bunches earlier in the week as RBs Lil’Jordan Humphrey (Southlake Carroll) and Kyle Porter (Katy) made their commitments to play in Austin along with DE D’Andre Christmas-Giles.

The signing day commitments starting coming in early on Wednesday morning and didn’t slow down for most of the day.

The momentum took off with the signing of the number-one safety in the class of 2016, Brandon Jones from Nacogdoches. Soon after, the Horns added ex-LSU OLB commit Erick Fowler from Manor.

Big names such as DT Chris Daniels (Euless Trinity), Eric Cuffee (Waco), and Jordan Elliott (Houston Westside) made their commitments later in the day to help propel Texas from #32 to #10 on ESPN’s Recruiting Nation in a span of 12 hours.

Arguably the biggest commitment of the day came in the late morning when the #2 OLB in the nation, Jeffrey McCulloch, faxed his letter of intent from Aldine Davis High School.

The amount of recruits committing to Texas today were at an almost alarming rate, but the rarity can be credited to HC Charlie Strong’s near-genius plan.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Strong told some players “not to commit” because he was worried rivals would target them with Texas coming off of a 5-7 season.

The strategy seemed to pay off as Strong and Texas will look to turn the corner as a football program to return to national relevance.
