On the final play of the game, the ball was jarred loose from the hands of a would-be May receiver on a play that would have tied to game and left the championship down to an extra point attempt. Instead, the ball slipped through and after the ruling on the field was confirmed by replay, the Westbrook Wildcats clinched their 1st ever UIL football championship in their first ever championship appearance with a 72-66 win over the May Tigers.
Westbrook’s Cedric Ware was named both the offensive and defensive MVP of the game. Ware rushed for 304 yards and 7 touchdowns on 25 carries, completed his only pass of the game for a 9-yard touchdown, caught one pass for 35 yards, and recorded a game high 12 tackles (10 solo) and one tackle for loss.
Shammah Stark also stood out for the Wildcats completing 5 of 10 passes for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Kaden Halk starred for the May Tigers with 177 yards rushing on 20 carries for 3 touchdowns, caught one pass for a 48-yard touchdown and recorded 8.5 tackles.
Avery Williford nearly matched Halk with 176 yards rushing on 12 carries for 3 touchdowns, 1 reception for 18 yards and a touchdown and recorded 7 tackles.
