Stratford Rallies for 4th State Title


Trailing 21-13 at the half the Stratford Elks rallied for 26 second half points to beat the Falls City Beavers 39-27Thursday afternoon in the UIL 2AD2 State Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The Elks came out of half and recovered an onside kick and scored on their first possession of the second half to cut the Falls City lead to 21-19.

Stratford took the lead 27-21 on a 1-yard QB sneak from Cody Rinne with 2:27 left in the 3rd quarter.

Falls City tied the game at 27 with 11:48 left in the game on a Luke Shaffer to Grant Jendrusch 52 yard pass.

From that point on it was all Stratford. Rinne twice connected with Dru Jones for touchdowns (14 and 32 yards) the last coming with 1:24 remaining in the game.

Rinne was named the game’s offensive MVP with 14 of 17 passing for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns to go with 72 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.

Falls City’s Luke Shaffer was named the game’s defensive MVP with 20 tackles.

Another outstanding performance was from Stratford’s Dru Jones. Jones has 9 recaptions for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns to go with 89 yards rushing.

For the Elks this was their 4th UIL football championship and their 1st since 2008.
