China Spring Dominates Second Half to Win Title


The China Spring Cougars defeated the Gilmer Buckeyes 31-7 Friday afternoon at AT&T Stadium to win the UIL 4AD2 Football Championship.

The game was tied at 7 with 6 seconds remaining in the 1st half as Gilmer lined up to attempt a short field goal. The kick was blocked and returned the distance by Gabe Watkins to give the Cougars a 14-7 halftime lead.

The second half was all China Spring as the Cougars outgained the Buckeyes 150 yards to 37 yards in the second half.

Major Bowden was named the game’s Offensive MVP rushing for 191 yards on 34 carries and 3 TDs as well as completing 8 of 11 pass attempts for 28 yards.

Tre Hafford was named the game’s Defensive MVP with 8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 1 pass break up.
