Paetow Wins 5AD1 Title in Overtime

It’s hard to image more drama and tension than the conclusion of the 5AD1 Championship game between the College Station Cougars and the Paetow Panthers Friday night at AT&T Stadium.

No team every held more than a 7 point lead the entire game. The game was tied 14-14 at the half and 21-21 after regulation.

Paetow won the overtime coin toss and elected to go second.

On their possession College Station drove down to the 7-yard and electing to kick a field goal on 4th and 3 to take a 24-21 lead.

On their possession, Paetow faced a 4th and 3 from the 17-yard line and lined up to attempt a field goal to tie the game and send it to a second overtime period. But before the snap a College Station defender jumped offsides making contact and giving Paetow a first down at the 12-yard line.

Paetow then faced a 4th and 1 from the 3-yard line. Paetow QB CJ Dumas kept the ball and bullied his way into the line. The officials spotted the ball and called for a measurement. The measurement showed a 1st down by the slimmest of margins. The replay officials conducted a review of the play and did not find enough evidence to overturn the spot of the ball.

The Jacob Brown carried the ball into the end zone to give the Paetow Panthers a 27-24 win their first state title in only their fourth year of playing varsity football.

Paetow’s Jacob Brown was named the game’s Offensive MVP with 112 yards on 33 carries and the one TD.

Paetow’s Kentrell Webb was named the game’s Defensive MVP with nine tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception.
