Bobcats Suspend Three Players

Demun Mercer, sophomore wide receiver, scores a touchdown Sept. 19 against Southern Mississippi.

Three players have been suspended from the Texas State football team for disciplinary reasons, junior wide receivers Demun Mercer and Brice Gunter, and freshman wide receiver Justin Gamble. It is unclear at this time what the disciplinary issues were with these three players but they have been removed from the team’s roster online.

Rumors started circulating on Twitter about the three players no longer being on the roster this morning, leaving many to speculate that they had either been cut, decided to transfer or were just leaving the program. While the details of the suspension have not been made public, a source inside the program said he is confident all three will be back playing for the Bobcats this fall and could even be back with the team this summer.

Mercer appeared in 23 games in his first two years at Texas State, even breaking into the starting rotation last season. For his collegiate career, Mercer has caught 28 passes and scored four touchdowns.

Gunter hasn’t played in a game for the Bobcats since the 2014 season, when he appeared in 11 games, making nine catches and scoring a touchdown. He missed all of last season and this spring after tearing his ACL in fall camp of 2015.

Gamble played in one game as a true freshman, recording one catch for four yards against Florida State. He didn’t play the rest of the season and was awarded a medical redshirt.

Both Mercer and Gamble ran with the first unit this spring, Mercer out wide and Gamble in the slot. Even though Gunter didn’t participate in spring practice, all three are expected to be significant contributors to a wide receivers group that needs all the help they can get.

This news comes one day after Texas State backup quarterback Blake Peterson announced he was transferring. Peterson would have been one of six quarterbacks on Texas State’s roster come this fall. He was the fourth string quarterback this spring, behind Tyler Jones, L.G. Williams and Connor White.
