A man from North Texas has entered a guilty plea to many rapes that took place about twenty years ago.

What Happened?

For cases involving Collin County, Tarrant County, Dallas County, and Denton County, Jeffrey Wheat, 51, has been sentenced to life in prison; for cases involving Dallas County, 30 years; and for cases involving Denton County, 20 years.

There are four cases in all for Wheat, one in each of the counties of Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, and Denton. His identity as the culprit in the 2003 assault of a lady was established using forensic genealogy, leading to his arrest in 2021.

After Wheat was connected to the four cold cases by forensic technology, he was the target of a nationwide manhunt. This was the first instance in Collin County that an offender was identified using forensic genealogy technology. To locate a match, it utilizes genetic data from direct-to-consumer businesses.

In Arlington, Virginia, in 2003, Wheat was involved in his first case; during the night, he broke into a woman’s home and assaulted her.

Wheat was employed by the credit card processing company that the sorority had used. Tuesday morning, Wheat was given a life sentence after agreeing to a plea agreement offered by the four counties’ prosecutors. A trio of females provided victim impact statements.

The daughter of one of Wheat’s victims spoke about how he had stolen her mother’s sense of value, dignity, and genuine love. Despite the fact that he would be incarcerated for the rest of his life, she said that today was a victory.

Judges from Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant Counties participated via Zoom during Wheat’s Colln County appearance to accept his plea and sentence him. The sentences will flow one after the other.
