The downtown Dallas YMCA’s facility has served as the location for after-work pickup games and lunchtime workouts for more than 40 years, but it may shortly close its doors permanently.

What Happened?

The T. Boone Pickens YMCA on Akard Street is under contract to an unnamed owner, according to the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.

It is immediately across the street. I can visit during lunch. It really has always been a part of my life, said participant Lisa Garrett.

The YMCA’s use of the more than 200,000 square foot building is nearing its end. President and CEO Curt Hazelbaker claimed that since the epidemic, membership has drastically decreased and building repairs and upgrades have cost more than $8 million.

You have a small membership base and an 83-year-old structure that requires significant repairs, he explained. After considering all of those factors, the board decided to “look and see if there is an opportunity to sell this.”

What the downtown Y delivered, however, cannot be quantified in monetary terms for some users of the facilities.

As a group, we would visit the Y every day starting in 2018, according to participant Kaylee Charlton. “We travel to our exercise classes as impacted us. Being a working person, it has, according to Garrett, been deeply ingrained in her life.

She said, “I’m not sure what I’m going to do now.The Saturday following Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, will see the building’s final day of operation. But according to Hazelbaker, they’re not ruling out downtown as a potential site in the future.

There might be a moment when we aren’t in the downtown area, but it doesn’t mean we won’t be, he said. Right now, from a fiduciary basis, it makes sense in our circumstances with the facility and membership.

Additionally, he stated that around two thirds of the clients they assist don’t visit the buildings but rather receive care off-site. And he added that devotion would endure whether it was building or not.
