Federal charges of bribery, smuggling, and wire fraud have been brought against a former member of the U.S. Border Patrol for reportedly demanding a $5,000 fee in exchange for allowing a migrant to enter the country using false identification.

Charges Of Wire Fraud

According to federal court documents, Fernando Castillo, who most recently served as a Border Patrol agent in El Paso, Texas, was detained in June and then charged by a grand jury on three charges of wire fraud, bribery of a public officer, and migrant smuggling.

Castillo quit Border Patrol on July 13 according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which is in charge of it. The agency issued a statement saying, “CBP takes allegations of misconduct seriously and investigates them thoroughly.” The inquiry is being assisted by the US Border Patrol.

An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by Castillo’s legal counsel. The accusations were first reported by CNN on Tuesday.

According to an affidavit submitted in support of a criminal complaint, Castillo was discovered by federal agents and prosecutors following several encounters with an unnamed immigrant on June 21. According to the FBI agent who created the document, Castillo was working at an El Paso immigration processing facility at the time.

A caller with the same voice contacted the immigrant on June 27 to arrange a trip back to the United States. According to authorities who heard the call and videotaped it, the caller told the immigrant to purchase bus tickets to Denver and another from there to Maryland.
