At Robb Elementary, Her Daughter Lost Her Life In The Incident. She Is Now A Candidate For Uvalde Mayor

Kimberly Mata-Rubio

Kimberly Mata-Rubio is putting on her running shoes on a steamy Texas morning in preparation for two marathons she will be doing in Uvalde as a memorial to her daughter Lexi, who was murdered in the Robb Elementary School massacre in 2022.

What Happened?

A charity run to honor Lexi’s life is the first event. Next up, a more difficult race to become mayor of Uvalde, a community still scarred by one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history and a police reaction gone wrong that is still being investigated, will be faced.

For the first time since the attack in May 2022 that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers, Uvalde voters will choose a new mayor on Tuesday. The election will determine how the town decides to move on after the tragedy, with some citizens eager to move on and others still in search of answers.

Families and survivors of gun violence have run for office around the United States, with varying degrees of success. The father of a man slain in a shooting at a Colorado movie theater failed his initial attempt to run for state senate in 2016 but won two years later. In 2018, the mother of a 17-year-old who was killed in a gas station shooting in Florida, Democratic U.S. Representative Lucy McBath, was also elected to Congress.

What Caused Shooting?

A yard sign backing Mata-Rubio’s opponent, former Uvalde mayor Cody Smith, was placed in the grass outside another residence. However, as Rubio got closer, the homeowner asked her to put up a sign as well.

According to University of Houston political science professor Brandon Rottinghaus, “her candidacy may have a little bit more movement because she knows the people in that town and she understands the hurt that this event caused.”

Things that made me think of Lexi filled the early morning on race day. While her family distributed yellow bracelets, Lexi’s favorite color, and played her favorite music, a tent outside served her favorite Starbucks drink, a sweet combination. Afterwards, everyone gathered for a group photo beneath Lexi’s mural.

After twenty years of living in Uvalde, Kenneth Woods is excited about a shake-up in the office following the shooting.

Regarding Rubio, Woods stated, “I think she is going to change a lot of things.” “But it is going to take the people to back her up.”
