According to sources, a car explosion on Wednesday afternoon near Niagara Falls, western New York’s Rainbow Bridge, marked the death of two persons. Four border crossings between the United States and Canada were halted, according to officials, while investigators handled the situation.

No Indication Of Terrorisim

The Canada Border Services Agency posted on social media that the Rainbow Bridge crossing reopened on Thursday, while the other three crossings reopened on Wednesday.

Two fatalities were verified by multiple law enforcement sources to CBS News inside the detonating car. The nationalities of the two deceased individuals are now unknown, a senior law enforcement official informed CBS News.

The husband was the driver and the woman was the passenger. U.S. law enforcement officials confirmed the deaths to CBS News on Wednesday night. The couple was married. According to the officials, the car was a Bentley that was probably worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Reason Of Fire

Although the cause of the car explosion is still unknown, New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated during a press conference on Wednesday that “there is no sign of terrorist involvement” in the “horrific” explosion as of yet.

Despite contradictory initial reports regarding the direction of travel, a senior law enforcement official from the United States informed CBS News on Wednesday afternoon that the car was approaching from the U.S. side. It struck the customs station, the official said.

According to Hochul, a border patrol agent was transported to a hospital, treated, and released after sustaining minor injuries while at the customs post.

According to law enforcement sources and preliminary assessments by the federal government, the car was moving quickly when it struck a curb, which caused it to crash through a fence and a Customs and Border Protection inspection area before catching fire and exploding. According to witnesses, the car hit the fence, shot into the air, and detonated when it reached the ground, a law enforcement source tells CBS News’ Pat Milton.

In a tweet, Toronto police said that they were also beefing up security: “We will be increasing directed patrols of uniformed officers throughout the city due to today’s incident at the Canada-US border.” There are no known threats against the city of Toronto, therefore this is being done out of an abundance of caution.”
