The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday that 40-year-old Robert Card, the perpetrator in the mass shootings that left eighteen people dead in Lewiston, Maine, has been identified.

What Happened?

Law authorities in the Lisbon region discovered the suspect’s body next to a recycling plant, as several law enforcement sources told CBS News. At a press conference on Friday evening, Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sus Chuck stated that the man had self-inflicted gunshot wounds and passed away.

The corpse was found near the Androscoggin River in Lisbon, a town approximately eight miles southwest of Lewiston, at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time, according to Sau Chuck. The white Subaru Outback belonging to the suspect was discovered abandoned at a boat launch on the river.

Heavy-armed police had surrounded a residence in Bowdoin, a small hamlet approximately 35 minutes from Lewiston, for several hours on Thursday night, but they had not been able to discover the culprit.

The murderous rampage started on Wednesday night just before 7 p.m. when Lewiston’s Spare Time Recreation bowling facility received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Six males and one women died there, according to police, from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Death Of Eight Person Took Place

Police were alerted to the location of another shooting at Scheme Gees Bar and Grille, which was located a few miles away, just over ten minutes later at 7:08 p.m. Police reported that eight persons had died there. Hospitals in the region also lost three more lives.

According to a law enforcement bulletin obtained by CBS News, the suspect, a U.S. Army Reserve soldier, had lately reported having mental health problems, including hearing voices, and had threatened to shoot up a military base in Saco. A spokesman for the New York Army National Guard told CBS News that he began “behaving erratically” in July and was admitted to a mental health facility for two weeks.

According to the medical examiner, the age range of the victims in the mass shooting was 14 to 76. A devoted father, a 14-year-old and his father, a bar manager who attempted to stop the gunman, a kid-teaching bowling instructor, and a number of participants in a cornhole competition for deaf athletes were among them.

“Although we are grateful that the suspect in this case no longer poses a threat, we know that nothing can bring back the lives he stole or undo the terror he inflicted,” Attorney General Merrick Garland stated in a statement.

In a statement, Maine Senator Susan Collins expressed gratitude to “the brave first responders who worked night and day to find this killer.”
