Unsafe Cities In Virginia 2023

SOURCEPortsmouth is first on the list of unsafe cities in Virginia in 2023. With a whopping population of 9,915, it is no surprise that the crime rate in this city is also high. The crime rate in Portsmouth is 228% higher than that of the Virginia state average, wherein residents have a 1 in 19 chance of becoming victims of any type of crime. In 2022 alone, there were a total of 4,429 crimes reported in Portsmouth, this includes 36 murders, 529 assaults, 138 robberies, and 3,007 incidents of theft.

Emporia is second on the list of unsafe cities in Virginia in 2023. Even with its mere population of 5,766, the crime rate in Emporia is still higher than the other cities in Virginia. The total crime rate in this city is 4,203, which is 61% higher than that of the US average. In the year 2022, a total of 166 crimes were reported in Emporia, with 144 being property crimes and 22 being violent crimes.

Galax is third on the list of unsafe cities in Virginia in 2023. The crime rate of this city is 3,768 per 100k, wherein residents have a 1 in 27 chance of being victims of any type of crime. In 2022, although there were no reports of murder in the area, 187 thefts, 25 burglaries, 9 assaults, and 22 motor thefts were reported in Galax.

Unsafe Cities In Virginia 2023

South Boston is fourth on the list of unsafe cities in Virginia in 2023. Considering its small population of 7,588, South Boston is a disproportionately unsafe city. The crime rate in this city stands at 3,587 per 100k, wherein residents have a 1 in 28 chance of becoming victims of any type of crime. Aside from crimes, residents of South Boston also suffer from a bad economy and poverty.

Norfolk is the last addition to the list of unsafe cities in Virginia in 2023. According to Travel Safe, Norfolk is the third-largest city in Virginia. Norfolk borders much waterfront property; this includes Chesapeake Bay and the Elizabeth River, the largest naval base in the world. Despite its charm, Norfolk residents face issues with a high crime rate that is 43% higher than that of the US average. Last year, a total of 9,850 crimes were reported.
