According to NBC Chicago, in a positive turn of events for over 9,000 property owners in Cook County, a welcome financial boost is on the way. The Cook County Treasurer, Maria Pappas, has announced the issuance of “automatic refunds” totaling $30.5 million. This windfall comes as a result of these property owners inadvertently overpaying their first installment of last year’s property taxes.

Starting this week, checks will be dispatched, signifying a substantial refund for these homeowners. What adds to the convenience is that, in most cases, there’s no need for recipients to go through any paperwork; the refunds are automatic. Over the next three months, approximately 48% of these refunds will be directly deposited into the bank accounts of the fortunate homeowners.

The intricacies lie in the nature of Cook County property tax payments, divided into two installments. Those receiving these automatic refunds had paid amounts in the first installment that exceeded the total due for the entire year. Notably, various channels are being utilized to disburse the refunds, with electronic deposits for around 1,900 homeowners, mailed refund checks for nearly 4,000, and a mix of electronic and mailed refunds for 2,900 others.

These refunds are particularly beneficial for homeowners who may qualify for property tax exemptions, such as seniors or disabled individuals, which were not applied when the first payment was due. The aim is to rectify overpayments and ensure a fair financial balance for these property owners. Importantly, the second installment of the 2022 property tax bills was due on December 1, 2023.
