The Department of Justice is anticipated to make public its assessment of the reaction to the horrific mass shooting at Robb Elementary School on January 18.

What Happened?

An unbiased description of the police operations that day and recommendations for assisting first responders in the case of another active shooter incident are anticipated to be included in the study. Even with almost 300 law enforcement personnel present at the site, the gunman had to be taken out in 77 minutes.

Three chances to deter or stop the gunman were lost, according to a study published by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center last year. After “egregiously poor decision-making,” hundreds of heavily armed officers were waiting in the hallway as the gunman opened fire into two fourth-grade classrooms, according to the almost 80-page investigation.

Pete Arredondo, the chief of police at Uvalde’s school and the on-site commander during the attack, is among the five policemen who have lost their jobs, along with two other officers from the Department of Public Safety.

The more than 15,000-person municipality is still split about how to proceed and hold the responding officers accountable. Certain relatives of the deceased have conveyed their dissatisfaction with the postponement of inquiries.

Before she can submit her findings to a grand jury, Uvalde County District Attorney Christina Mitchell stated in December that a criminal inquiry of the police reaction will last into this year.
