Eight people were shot and killed in Joliet, but the purpose behind the shootings remains unknown to investigators. The alleged gunman was discovered dead in Texas on Monday night, appearing to have committed suicide.

What Happened ?

On Tuesday afternoon, Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans made an announcement on Romeo Nance, a 23-year-old alleged shooter. Evans stated that although the seven victims who died there were not discovered until Monday morning, authorities believe the shooting spree started at two houses across the street from one another in the 2200 block of West Acres Road on Sunday.

Investigators surmise that Nance shot a 42-year-old man in the leg on Sunday afternoon in the 200 block of Davis Street in Joliet, following the shootings on West Acres Road. The man was the only casualty of the gun rampage to survive.

Investigators think that about ten minutes later, on Sunday afternoon, Nance shot and murdered 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare at the Pheasant Run Apartments complex in unincorporated Joliet Township. After spending almost three years in the United States, Bakare, a native of Nigeria, was discovered bleeding on the ground due to a gunshot wound. After being taken to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead.

Seven Bodies Discovered

Investigators discovered that Bakare was shot after leaving his house to purchase smokes at a nearby petrol station. After discovering blood at that residence, the deputies searched the other two and discovered a total of seven bodies.

Evans stated that investigators are still searching for a motive in each of the killings and have not discovered a connection between the victims on West Acres Road and the other two shootings.

Evans added that in the midst of the Acres Road murder investigation, authorities were also searching for a 3-year-old who had gone missing but had subsequently been discovered in a nearby village with family. The toddler’s connection to these crimes was not disclosed by the police.
