SOURCE– Ex-Philly labor leader John Dougherty, mostly known as “Johnny Doc,” was convicted by a federal jury on Thursday of using more than $650K union funds for personal use.

John Dougherty led Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for over three decades. He was convicted of conspiracy, embezzlement, and other multiple charges by a federal jury after a month-long trial.

Aside from the former Philadelphia labor leader, the federal jury also convicted codefendant Brian Burrows, the former president of Local 98, of the same charges. Prosecutors said that both John Dougherty and Brian Burrows used the money for items including renovation of homes, groceries, and concerts.

The federal jury deliberated over several days after hearing the evidence, which includes government wiretap recordings. In the end, the federal jury convicted John Dougherty on more than 60 counts of conspiracy, embezzlement, wire and tax fraud. Dougherty was acquitted on three counts.
