According to a person familiar with the situation, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty of killing George Floyd, was severely hurt on Friday at a federal prison in Arizona after being stabbed by another prisoner.

What Happened?

The attack took place at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, which has had staffing shortages and security failures. The individual talked to the AP under the condition of anonymity and was not permitted to publicly disclose the specifics of the attack.

In a little more than a year, this is also the second significant incident at the federal prison in Tucson. An inmate at the low-security prison camp at the site pulled out a gun in November 2022 and tried to kill a guest in the head. The prisoner shouldn’t have had the weapon, but it malfunctioned and no one was harmed.

August 2022 saw Chauvin, 47, transferred from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison to FCI Tucson to serve a 22½-year state term for second-degree murder and a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights.

The United States Supreme Court denied Chauvin’s appeal of his murder conviction last week. In a related move, Chauvin is attempting in vain to reverse his guilty plea to the federal government, arguing that fresh evidence disproves his involvement in Floyd’s killing.

On May 25, 2020, Floyd, a Black man, passed away after Chauvin, a White man, pushed a knee against his neck for nine and a half minutes as they were standing outside a convenience shop. Floyd was thought to be attempting to pass a fake $20 bill.

Deep, previously unknown weaknesses in the Justice Department’s largest law enforcement agency, the Bureau of Prisons, which employs over 30,000 people, houses 158,000 prisoners, and has an annual budget of over $8 billion, have been discovered by an ongoing AP investigation.

Numerous escapes, chronic violence, deaths, widespread sexual abuse and other criminal behavior by staff, and acute staffing shortages that have impeded responding to emergencies, such as inmate assaults and suicides, have all been reported by the AP.
