The West 7th entertainment sector in Fort Worth can soon expect new security and safety enhancements. This follows the death of a student at TCU earlier this month. “Losing Wes Smith so tragically was personal to me,” said Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker.

Rising Crime In The City

Take my mayor hat off for a second first, and having to walk through it with a 12-year-old son is challenging, she said. “Honestly, it’s one of the harder things I’ve had to do as a parent,” she added. “I’ve visited with bar owners in the past 24 to 48 hours, and I’ve been incredibly delighted. They’re at the table wanting to improve themselves while also acknowledging how much the city has done to help,” Parker added.

The issue, according to bar owner Chas Taipale, is on the streets rather than within the establishments.

“That’s where the monitoring needs to happen the most, and we’re trying our best to have lighting, just no dark spots,” he said. “And more personnel being aware as far as cameras,” he said.
