Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Passes Away At Age 96

The Carter Center declared on Sunday that Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady, has passed away at the age of 96. She passed away “peacefully, with family by her side” at her Plains, Georgia, home on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2:10 p.m. ET, according to the Carter Center.

How Did She Died?

“In everything I ever achieved, Rosalynn was my equal partner,” the former president Jimmy Carter declared in a statement. “When I needed it, she provided me with sage advice and inspiration. Rosalynn’s presence in the world ensured that I always have love and support from someone.”

According to her family, the former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia but was still living at home in Plains, Georgia, with her spouse, as of May.

“During her incredible life as First Lady of Georgia and the First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn did so much to address many of society’s greatest needs,” said President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in a statement honoring her for “inspiring a nation and the world.”

She supported the often-unseen and underpaid caretakers of our children, aging loved ones, and individuals with disabilities. She also fought for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls, as well as for everyone’s mental health and welfare.”

There was no other relationship between a president and first lady at the time like that of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s.

Rosalynn Smith, the eldest of four children born in Plains on August 18, 1927, began dating Jimmy Carter at the age of 18.

One of her long-term causes was that once they moved into the White House, she continued to serve as her husband’s sounding board and utilized her position as first lady to advance understanding of mental illness. She presided over the President’s Commission on Mental Health in an honorary capacity.
