Eddie Bernice Johnson, a former congresswoman, will lay in state on Monday in The Hall of State at Fair Park.At the age of 89, the trailblazer passed away on New Year’s Eve.
For more than fifty years, including thirty in Congress, EBJ, as she was affectionately known, served the people of North Texas.On Monday night, President Joe Biden will fly to Dallas to give a speech during her wake at Concord Church.
“She and I worked together throughout her 30 years in congress, and I’ve always been grateful for her friendship and partnership…” Regarding Johnson, Biden stated. “She was a role model and mentor to many public officials throughout her life, having served as the chair of the congressional black caucus in the past.
In addition to being the first African American woman elected to the Texas House, Senate, and U.S. House, Johnson was also the first African American woman to lead the Science, Space, and Technology Committee and the chief psychiatric nurse at the Dallas VA.
Where The Funeral Will Be Held?
She listed improving the UT Southwestern Medical Center and assisting UT Arlington and UT Dallas in becoming elite research universities as some of her finest achievements.
Johnson is survived by a son, three grandsons, and five great-grandchildren, three of whom unveiled her Washington, DC, portrait.The Hall of State will be open for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Concord Church will host the wake from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Johnson’s funeral will take place at Concord Church tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.The Texas State Cemetery in Austin will host a graveside service on Wednesday.
