General Laura Richardson, U.S. Southern Command’s commander, visited the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH in Peru as part of her three-day tour to discuss ongoing research collaborations in Central and South America.

General Laura Richardson Explores Research at NAMRU SOUTH During Peru Visit

General Laura Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command, recently visited the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH during her three-day tour of operations in Peru. According to DVIDS, the purpose of her visit was to discuss ongoing research collaborations between the United States and countries in Central and South America.

During General Laura Richardson’s time at NAMRU SOUTH, she learned about various research projects.

NAMRU SOUTH leaders briefed General Laura Richardson on the work being done in the fields of Entomology, Parasitology, and Veterinary Services. They highlighted the following initiatives:

  • creating risk maps for insect-borne diseases,
  • combating diarrhea-causing Campylobacter bacteria,
  • and offering diagnostic support to Peruvian military personnel returning from deployment with fever-related illnesses.

General Laura Richardson Commends U.S. and Peruvian Military

General Laura Richardson praised the dedicated efforts of the U.S. and Peruvian military teams working together to safeguard their people’s interests. Her visit also included John McNamara and Rear Adm. Jorge Enrique Andaluz Echevarría. According to the reports, she emphasized the long-standing partnership between NAMRU SOUTH and the Peruvian Navy.

NAMRU SOUTH’s presence in Peru supports research on infectious diseases important to the U.S. military and public health, benefiting not only the Department of Defense but also the people of Peru and neighboring Latin American allies. This includes diseases like dengue fever and leishmaniasis, which are not commonly found in the United States.

Overall, Gen. Richardson’s visit highlighted the importance of international collaboration in scientific research and public health efforts in the region.
