A fire that started overnight in Denton has claimed one life, badly injured another, and forced more than a dozen tenants to flee their homes.

What Happened?

An apartment building in the 1200 block of Dallas Drive was reported to be on fire just before two in the morning. The caller said that they were unable to escape the fire because they were trapped on the upper floor.

Within six minutes, a DFD fire engine and ambulance arrived on the scene, reporting many casualties trapped in intense flames. As soon as possible, crews started battling the fire and assisting in the victims’ evacuation. One victim was safely evacuated by crews from a second-story apartment. While searching for possible casualties, the teams discovered one male have died.

Building Suffered Damages

At 2:15 in the morning, a second alarm was raised, resulting in a total response of seven fire engines, one truck, four MICUs, three chief officers, and four fire marshals.

By 2:45 a.m., the fire was brought under control by the crews. The building’s eight apartments suffered significant damage.

According to the City of Denton Fire Department, the 16-unit, two-story structure contained over 20 displaced individuals that they had reported to the Red Cross.

Because there were so many potential heat sources and a lot of stuff in the apartment, the DFD Fire Marshal’s Office declared the fire to be “undetermined” at this point.
